Foundation crack photo checklist

Foundation photos should show both the closeup detail and where the crack sits on the home.

Quick answer

Foundation Crack Photo Checklist

How to photograph cracks, movement, and related symptoms before requesting help.

Exterior photos

Exterior photos should show the wall, grade, drainage, nearby openings, and crack location together.

  • wide photo of the wall
  • closeup of the crack
  • coin or ruler for scale
  • nearby windows and doors
  • soil and drainage below the crack

Interior photos

Interior symptoms can help connect foundation movement with doors, floors, trim, drywall, or water stains.

  • drywall cracks near openings
  • door gaps
  • floor gaps at baseboards
  • sloping or uneven areas
  • water stains near cracks

Tracking

Repeat photos from the same angle over time. Movement patterns are easier to understand when dates and weather context are preserved.

  • date each photo
  • repeat after heavy rain
  • repeat after dry weather
  • note whether cracks widen
  • save contractor or engineer notes

Note

A single closeup is rarely enough. Add a wide shot so the provider can see location and context.
