Water damage

Water damage photo checklist

Good photos make cleanup, insurance, and provider conversations easier. Take wide shots first, then closeups.

Quick answer

Water Damage Photo Checklist

What to photograph before cleanup, demolition, drying, and insurance review.

Before cleanup

Capture the condition before anything moves. Wide photos help show where the water traveled and closeups support material-level decisions.

  • each affected room from the doorway
  • the water source if visible
  • wet flooring and baseboards
  • water under cabinets
  • ceiling stains or sagging areas

Closeups

Closeups are useful when they show texture, swelling, staining, seams, or scale. Pair them with wide room photos so the location is clear.

  • flooring seams lifting
  • soft drywall or staining
  • wet carpet and pad
  • cabinet swelling
  • damaged contents

During drying

Drying documentation helps show what equipment was used, what materials were removed, and whether moisture improved over time.

  • equipment placement
  • removed materials
  • moisture readings if provided
  • daily progress
  • final dry condition

Note

Do not enter unsafe areas for photos. Avoid rooms with electrical hazards, sewage, floodwater, or sagging ceilings.
