First steps
The first steps are about safety, source control, documentation, and preventing dry areas from becoming part of the loss.
- stop the water source
- avoid electrical hazards
- photograph the wet area
- move dry furniture away
- do not assume the pad will air dry
Check nearby areas
Water often travels farther than the first visible wet spot. Check adjacent rooms, lower levels, cavities, and flooring edges.
- carpet pad squish or odor
- baseboards and drywall edges
- rooms below the leak
- closets and corners
- subfloor moisture
Provider questions
Good providers can explain water category, drying approach, safety concerns, and documentation without relying on vague promises.
- Can the carpet be lifted?
- Does the pad need removal?
- What water category is this?
- How will subfloor drying be confirmed?
- When should odor be a concern?
Note
Clean-water carpet decisions can differ from gray water, sewage, or stormwater. Ask before reusing wet pad.
